Healthy Habits for Life!

One of the frustrating things about living here in Korea is the lack of physical activity opportunities for kids. Most people don’t have yards to run around and play in but even more frustrating is that most kids spend their free time in hogwons. This means that even if you don’t go to a hogwon you don’t have any friends to play with because they are all in hogwons. But even if you happen to have some time to play with your friends most of the kids don’t know how to play outside and have fun anymore. Most kids these days want to play computer games or watch TV. So, what does this mean for you Sudona? This means that you don’t get enough exercise and this is one of the reasons you have put on weight. It’s not like you are the type of kid that just likes to sit around, you are actually an active kid but you just don’t have the opportunity to get out and be active. All of this has caused me to worry a bit about what your future health will be like. I also am even more worried because there is an obesity problem that runs in the family.
So, my plan has been to get more exercise into your life and help you with portion control. I have no interest in putting you on a diet. I think it is far to early for anything like that. My objective is to help you create healthy habits. I think your biggest problem is with portion control. You eat more than I do and I don’t know how to get you to cut down on your portions. I discuss it with your mother but she has not really been as helpful as I would like. I don’t think she really understands the dangers of obesity. We all eat pretty healthy. We don’t say that you girls can never have junk food but we just don’t eat it very often. Most of the time for snacks we have fruit or nuts. We don’t really drink soft drinks either. So the weight issue comes down to a lack of exercise and portion control.
We have decided to get you on the running machine for 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. It hasn’t always been easy but you have adjusted to it now and you do it without much complaint. One thing that I do to help you out is that I take animation movies and put them on my iPod so you can watch while you run. This has helped tremendously.
